Your role at Baxter

Baxter offers a robust summer internship program based in the Chicagoland area that provides meaningful work assignments and projects that immerse students in Baxter’s culture designed to provide practical work experience highlighting what an individual would do in a similar full-time role with the ability to make a business impact.  You'll be paired with a mentor, receive support from your manager, and have access to the entire Baxter employee community to ensure your success.

Baxter’s Advanced surgery team provides lifesaving products focused on wound hemostasis and sealing as well as other specialty surgical procedures. We are focused on ways to improve these products to simplify workflow in the operating room or optimization of the manufacturing process. This internship will be specifically designed to leverage innovative thinking for design or process optimization solutions that may drive further development programs. Interns will be assigned to specific tasks in support of new product development activities or on-market support of existing products.  Responsibilities typically involve a combination of literature research, laboratory work, and data analysis.  The intern will be responsible for their individual project but will work in collaboration with Baxter team members internal and external to the R&D function.

The intern will work with the assigned mentor and manager throughout the summer, culminating in a written project summary and final presentation at the end of the internship.

What you'll be doing:

  • Conduct technology evaluations and investigate the feasibility of potential opportunities for the Baxter.

  • Work under the direction and with the guidance of Baxter engineers and scientists.

  • Perform literature research and laboratory prototyping and testing.

  • Communicate ideas and findings to the R&D organization

  • Perform standard analytical testing assignments under defined methods, techniques, theories, corporate and division Standard Operating Policies

  • Select sound techniques to solve problems and make design recommendations under direction of mentor.

  • Make recommendations for design or process improvements based on technical knowledge

What you'll bring:

Baxter is targeting students with proven academic performance and leadership potential.  Ideal candidates will combine technical and business knowledge with analytical strength and creative problem-solving abilities.

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Physics or related degree.

  • GPA of 3.0 or above

  • Required knowledge and application of analytical chemistry

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and problem-solving skills

  • Positive attitude, team-oriented, adaptive to change, and collaborative

  • Actively involved in campus or community activities and organizations, preferably in leadership roles

This policy provides the benefits of connecting and collaborating in-person in support of our Mission. The flexible workplace policy is subject to local laws and legal requirements.
