St. John Fisher University is an independent, liberal arts institution that provides a transformative education to approximately 3,800 undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students each year. Across its five Schools, Fisher offers nearly 40 majors in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, business, education, and nursing; 11 pre-professional programs; and master's and doctoral programs in business, nursing, education, pharmacy, and public health. The University's residential campus boasts a robust living and learning community and a successful intercollegiate athletics program. Overview:
The Office of Student Engagement and Leadership develops programs, services, and experiences designed to facilitate and maximize students' involvement, success, and sense of belonging at the University. This includes the development, organization, and assessment of inclusive and comprehensive co-curricular student opportunities.
As the leader of the Student Engagement and Leadership team, the Director is responsible for the overall management of the operations of the office as well as student transitions and leadership development programs. The director is a caring and innovative professional who contributes to our institutional commitment of fostering an inclusive and equitable community of learning.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Departmental Leadership (80%)
Supervise the Office of Student Engagement and Leadership
Responsible for oversight of approximately 55% of clubs and organizations including purchasing, check-ins, audits for good standing, and policy adherence.
Provide leadership and direction for departmental initiatives that support the university's mission, Fisher Creed, University goals and foster a welcoming, inclusive environment for all students
Establish learning outcomes and assessment for student engagement and leadership
Work to fulfill strategic plan initiatives in the areas of student engagement and leadership
Oversee the planning, implementation, and assessment of University-wide programming, e.g. Orientation, Family Weekend, Senior Week.
Manage the budgets for the office, orientation, and Student Government Association
Grow meaningful student engagement in alignment with University goals and strategic plan initiatives
Assume responsibility for leadership development including:
Develop and implement a comprehensive leadership program
Advise and support the leadership development of Student Government Association and meet weekly with board members of SGA
Provide relevant trainings throughout the academic year for student organization leaders
Gather feedback and compile and analyze qualitative and quantitative data to assess the achievement of program goals, and the effectiveness of programmatic efforts
Advise and support the SGA Finance Committee and Campus Review Board ( CRB )
Provide individualized coaching for emerging student leaders
Develop leadership training for Orientation leaders
Orientation Team leadership development
Develop regular training, resources, and communication for club advisors
Departmental Responsibilities (10%)
Serve as a point of contact for student organizations
Serve as a campus resource, promote understanding of and engage campus in conversations related to engagement and leadership, including convocation presentations, open houses and Great Beginnings, etc.
Assist team with program planning, logistics, and staffing for departmental events and initiatives including Commencement
Management of the Cardinal HUB in conjunction with department staff
Assess programs regularly and utilize the results for program improvement, learning outcomes, and collaboration with campus constituents
Assist in developing Senior Week activities
Lead annual review of policies and procedures
Other Administrative (10%)
Attend departmental and division meetings
Meet weekly with direct reports
Attend weekly individual meetings with supervisor
Assume other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor
Education / Experience:
Required:
Bachelor's degree
Three years of experience in student engagement/student activities or equivalent
Prior supervision experience
Preferred:
Master's degree
Competencies / Skills:
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and initiatives independently
Established pattern of high attention to detail
Outstanding interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
Experience with student activities and leadership development
Effective human relations skills and a thorough understanding of student development
Strong desire to build relationships with students, colleagues, and university partners
Communicate effectively orally and in writing, including the ability to engage one-on-one and in public forums
Exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills
Demonstrated history of working with integrity and sound judgment, as well as the ability to make difficult decisions
Supervision of Employees:
Direct supervision of Assistant Director and Associate Director
Direct and indirect supervision of student workers
Work Hours:
Generally M-F 8:30am-4:30pm. Hours may be flexed to accommodate evening meetings with student groups and weekend programming. Occassional extended hours, some weekends, and special events.
