Technician III - Flyak Lab - CVM

A Laboratory Technician III position is immediately available in the Flyak laboratory in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Cornell University. A candidate will contribute to fully funded antibody and vaccine discovery projects.

What you will do

The successful candidate will work with a multidisciplinary research team on one or more projects to isolate and characterize monoclonal antibodies. The candidate will express and purify antibodies and antigens as part of an effort to develop novel therapeutics and vaccine candidates. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • General lab duties, including buffer, reagent prep, cloning, plasmid purification, gel electrophoresis
  • Maintenance of common human cell lines, performing transfection reactions for protein expression
  • Protein purification (affinity chromatography) and assist with ELISA binding assays
  • Perform basic mouse manipulation after training
  • Setting up and screening protein crystallography trays
  • Maintenance of accurate and detailed laboratory records
  • Maintain laboratory supply inventory, including placing orders and receiving for the lab

What you have

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related field and up to 2 years of lab experience in biochemistry, cell biology, or immunology laboratory or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of basic chemistry, buffer preparation, and calculations
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills, and ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong attention to detail and familiarity with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel software
  • Must be able to function independently following an orientation period

This position requires successfully completing Cornell training courses (i.e., animal use, radioisotope use, chemical safety), if not already completed.

If you have all those things, great! Here are some preferred qualifications:

  • 1-2 years of lab experience working with mammalian cell lines
  • Experience with protein purification
  • Experience working with mice

Important Details about the Position

  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
  • This is a full-time one-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.
